Castaways - Shearwater
I have a love/hate thing with Shearwater. Every couple of years I get super excited to hear they have a new record coming out, but I always wind up being disappointed once I hear it. So I listened to their brand new record, The Golden Archipelago, with cautious ears and hesitation. I’m still on the fence about the record as a whole - the voice and theatrics put me out far more often than they let me in - but this song? This I love. It’s bombastic and melodramatic and over-the-top in all the very best ways - for some reason I picture lead singer Jonathan Meiburg (and former Okkervil River-er) on a big huge sailboat with full white sails, standing at its bow as it glides across a vast and mighty ocean, singing the chorus, his hands raised up to the sky.
